1 Dead, 8 People Hurt in Michigan Avenue Bus Crash

Evanston woman hears "horrible thuddy crash" as one pedestrian is pinned beneath bus and seriously injured.

One person was killed, another critically injured and and seven others hurt in a CTA bus crash on Michigan Avenue just before 6 p.m. Tuesday. At least 10 ambulances responded to the scene near Lake Street. The Cook County Medical Examiner confirmed late Tuesday night that one person seriously hurt in the bus crash later died.

Reports the Chicago Sun-Times:

Evanston resident Julie Larkin works in the Michigan Plaza building near the site of the crash, and said she was in a first-floor CVS when she heard a scream and then “a horrible thuddy crash.”

She ran outside to see the bus driver with his eyes closed, apparently unconscious. Several good Samaritans got on the bus to check on him while she called 911.

“I’ll never forget that scream,” Larkin said.

One woman was pinned under the bus, and several cars were involved in the crash. A CTA spokesman said the No. 148 Clarendon/Michigan Express bust was involved in the crash and was eastbound when the accident happened. » read more on SunTimes.com

Reports the Chicago Tribune:

Charles Valiquette, 51, visiting from Dayton, Ohio, was on Michigan Avenue just north of Lake Street when he heard the sound of a crash. He turned around to see a bus up on the sidewalk, with a woman pinned underneath.

He said he ran over to try to help and he could tell she was injured.

Valiquette said he stayed with her until paramedics arrived to remove her from under the bus.

“They took her from under the bus and loaded her onto the gurney,” he said. “Then they spread the sheet out on her.” » read more on ChicagoTribune.com
