Looking at This Past Father's Day to Understand Trends in Plastic Surgery

Father’s Day has traditionally been filled with ties, fancy pens, barbecues, and trips to the local barber for an old-fashioned shave. In the past few years, these oldie-but-goody gift ideas have started taking a backseat to a trip to the local cosmetic surgeon instead. From non-surgical procedures such as BOTOX® Cosmetic ("BroTox" as Dad's are calling it) or CoolSculpting® to surgical options including tummy tucks and facelifts, more and more men are sitting in the waiting room to see how they can enhance their image.

Why is this sudden trend increasing in popularity? One strong theory is the difficult job market our nation has been dealing with in recent years. There’s a desire among men to improve their appearances to gain an upper hand over their younger rivals. With the increased competition for positions, the older workforce is feeling the need for some personal improvement.

With the increase in men seeking cosmetic surgery, many cosmetic surgeons are now offering Father’s Day packages to increase summer procedures for men. One surgeon actually sees a 25% increase in male clients in the months after Father's Day. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons® said that of the estimated 14.6 million cosmetic procedures performed in the United States in 2012; about 1.2 million were performed on men. It’s safe to say the taboo of men seeking plastic surgery is diminishing. Women aren’t the only ones who feel the societal pressure to look their best.

So, what are the most popular surgical procedures performed on men? Rhinoplasty, liposuction, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), male breast reduction, and facelifts are the top contenders. BOTOX, dermal fillers, and non-invasive forms of liposuction are high on the list, as well (and are easier on the wallet). All patients, male or female, should keep this in mind: Make sure your doctor is certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery, like Dr. Thomas Mustoe, a plastic surgeon in Chicago. This due diligence will ensure your procedure is performed by a highly experienced, well-trained surgeon.

Plastic surgeons are taking note of their new, masculine demographic. Rest assured, they’re adding some new magazine choices to those waiting room coffee tables, such as Men’s Health and Esquire.

So, Dad, how about some BroTox?
