Now Hiring: Lake View Walmart Plans to Create 125 New Jobs
The retailer's newest Neighborhood Market grocery store on North Broadway is now hiring, but are they the jobs neighbors want?
Walmart’s new Neighborhood Market grocery store in Lake View has opened an adjacent hiring center to prepare for the store’s upcoming debut, and store representatives say they plan to hire roughly 125 new associates.
A statement was issued Monday regarding the 375 jobs Walmart plans to create at its three new Neighborhood Market stores around Chicago. The other two locations are currently under construction in Back of the Yards and Little Village on the South Side.
The temporary hiring center at 2856 N. Broadway is right next to the new 33,000-square-foot store slated to be open early next year. And while Walmart says it will hire both full- and part-time employees working in different areas of the store – including supervisory positions – residents and business owners are still on edge about the new arrival.

“They’re coming in here on the tails of having a huge lawsuit with the labor unions and discriminatory problems with people like women,” Lakeview East Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Maureen Martino said. “The community spoke, and they spoke pretty loud. They really did not want this Walmart to come in.”
Anticipating questions about the type of jobs available at the new store, Walmart citied the room for career growth, its health insurance plans and its stock-purchasing program, among a variety of other benefits available to eligible employees.

And while the store manager in Lake View was not able to comment, the manager at the new Little Village store in Chicago was quoted in Walmart’s statement regarding working with the mega-retailer.
“Walmart provides good jobs with opportunities for career growth, and we look forward to talking with candidates who are interested in joining our team,” said Little Village store manager Fabian Lehaney.

In addition, a neighborhood advisory group has been chosen with help from Ald. Tom Tunney’s (44th) office to give Walmart some key insight to the Lake View community. And while Martino notes that nobody from the area business community was asked to join the group, she agrees it’s a step in the right direction.
“Walmart is going to have a hiring site in that building to hire locally (later this year),” 44th Ward Chief of Staff Bennett Lawson said. “They’re also doing a community advisory group with a small group of local people who can give feedback on corporate giving, community give-back, product mix, operations like loading and unloading, hours, marketing and other things to help them understand what they’re getting into in Lake View, which is good.”
The Lake View hiring center will accept applications from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday, and 7 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Interested applicants also can apply online at Walmarts career website.
