Northbound Michigan Avenue was shut down between 6 and 7 p.m. Thursday night as protesters entered the street and chained themselves together to block traffic near Water Tower Place and the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, where the University of Chicago was hosting a fundraiser.
The protesters, calling themselves the Trauma Care Coalition, were moved out of the street and arrested by 6:45 p.m. Other protesters continued to picket outside the hotel. They are objecting to a lack of trauma care on the South Side “and the University of Chicago’s refusal to expand trauma care.” The protesters want the University of Chicago to commit to opening a trauma center, according to NBC Chicago.
