Loaded .38-Caliber Handgun Found in Backpack at Midway Airport: TSA

Beecher man charged with carrying a concealed firearm at an airport.

CHICAGO, IL -- A Beecher, IL man was arrested after security officials found a gun in his carry-on luggage at Chicago Midway Airport on Tuesday morning, police said.

William Krygsheld, 44, was charged with one misdemeanor count of carrying a concealed firearm in an airport. He was released on an I-bond and has a court hearing scheduled for Sept. 20 at Cook County Branch 34-4 at 155 W. 51st St.

TSA officials said they observed the gun in a backpack that Krygsheld was carrying around 8:10 a.m. Tuesday. The gun was allegedly detected inside the backpack as it passed through the X-ray at Midway.

The gun was a loaded .38 caliber. TSA officers immediately notified Chicago police who responded to the checkpoint and arrested the Krygsheld, who was flying to Phoenix, TSA spokesman Michael McCarthy said.

Firearms, ammunition and firearm component are prohibited in carryon luggage. Passengers may transport an unloaded firearm in checked luggage if it is declared to the airline, unloaded, and placed in a locked, hard-sided container.
