The 19-year-old woman accused of dropping her newborn baby out the window of an Uptown high rise building appeared in court Thursday where her attorney argued for her release on bail.
Mubashra Uddin is facing a first-degree murder charge. Prosecutors said she dropped her full-term, baby daughter out of an eighth-story window moments after giving birth late in the evening on Nov. 11. Uddin allegedly told police she got rid of the baby when she heard her mother coming down the hall.

Family and friends said Uddin grew up in a strict Muslim home and her parents forbid talking to boys, especially African-American boys, according to the Chicago Tribune’s account of Thursday’s hearing.
She attended Uplift High School until her Pakistani-born parents learned of her boyfriend. She was pulled out of high school and homeschooled.

Uddin learned she was pregnant in February but told only her boyfriend and a friend, prosecutors said.
She is a student at DeVry University. Friends and family describe her as a timid girl “who loved babies,” the Tribune reported.
The baby girl was still alive when she landed on the ground. A man visiting his girlfriend in the high-rise building in the 800 block of West Eastland Avenue found the child and wrapped her in shirts. The baby was taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital where she soon after massive injuries, including complex skull fractures, a fractured spine, a broken left shoulder, fractured ribs and a lacerated aorta, lacerated liver and lacerated bowel and blood in the abdomen.
Police found Uddin by canvassing the building and talking to neighbors. Blood evidence was found throughout the family’s three-bedroom apartment.
“The act of dropping a newborn out of an eighth-story window to its eventual death is exceedingly evil, exceedingly cruel,” Judge James Brown said as he ordered her held without bail.
No one in the family’s small apartment claims to have heard Uddin giving birth, including an 11-year-old sister who normally shared a bed with Uddin, the Tribune reported.
Uddin is being treated for depression in jail. Her attorneys are expected to file file a motion asking for a judge to review her bond.
