CHICAGO, IL — If this is how Cubs fans celebrate the team's first National League pennant in 71 years, imagine how Chicagoans will react if the North Siders win the World Series after 108 years.

Cubs fans were flying the "W" after Chicago's historic victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 6 of the NL Championship Series on Saturday. They descended on Wrigleyville outside the ballpark and packed the streets, climbing lamp posts and overtaking police barricades, according to reports. Crowds chanted "Cub-bies, Cub-bies!" and some individuals shot off fireworks.

Police cut off pedestrian traffic to the streets around Wrigley Field before the Cubs even won the game. The police presence, which included officers on foot and on horseback, began increasing around the third inning after Chicago took a 3-0 lead.

But officers were overwhelmed by the crowds fairly soon after the game ended, according to some of the talk heard over the police scanner:

In a statement released after the game, Mayor Rahm Emanuel not only congratulated the Cubs but also encouraged fans to enjoy the victory before the Cubs try to make more history by winning the World Series:

"Incredible. Absolutely incredible. The Chicago Cubs are National League champions. Across Chicago and around the world generations of Cubs fans, from the very young to the very, very old, are celebrating tonight. Rightfully so. We are witnessing history right before our eyes. Wrigley was rocking all night, and our Cubs just won the pennant. So fly the W Chicago, the fun continues in Cleveland on Tuesday night. Go Cubs!"
