LAKE COUNTY, IL — Construction on a major road improvement project in southern Lake County, including an underpass beneath Canadian National railroad tracks, is expected to begin in 2029.
The Lake County Board approved $7.6 million Tuesday for land acquisition and other expenses associated with the Old McHenry Crossings project, according to the Daily Herald. The estimated $150 million project aims to reduce traffic congestion and improve safety along Old McHenry Road in the Hawthorn Woods, Lake Zurich and Kildeer area, where nearly 30,000 vehicles travel daily.
Planned improvements include an underpass beneath the railroad tracks, intersection upgrades at Fairfield and Midlothian roads, additional lanes along Quentin Road and new pedestrian and bicycle connections.
Design engineering and land acquisition are expected to continue through 2028, with construction on the underpass scheduled to begin the following year, the Daily Herald is reporting.
