Man Rescued During Apartment Fire

Man was found in his apartment using a thermal imaging camera.

A man was found using a thermal-imaging camera as Lake Zurich firefighters investigated and extinguished a fire at the on Wednesday morning.

According to a press release from Fire Chief Dave Wheelock, the was called to the scene for a water flow alarm at 8:18 a.m. When firefighters arrived, they found a partially evacuated building at 87 N. Bueshing Road. A resident told firefighters that water had entered their apartment from an upstairs unit and, upon investigation, found that a smoke detector was going off in the apartment above.

Wheelock said the fire was found in a single-bedroom apartment and was likely caused by smoking in bed. Two sprinkler heads had been activated, helping to subdue the fire. Using a thermal-imaging camera, firefighters found the apartment's resident unconscious in the bathroom. He was transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington. The man regained consciousness in the ambulance en route to the hospital and is expected to recover.

The apartment building is still habitable.

Lake Zurich received assistance from the Barrington, Lincolnshire, Long Grove and Wauconda fire departments.
