It's a Draw for Girls Football Homecoming Kickoff Games

Parents, faculty and friends came out to Lake Zurich High School on Wednesday night to root for their favorite junior or senior girls flag football team for the official start of homecoming week festivities.

The highly-spirited and much-anticipated girls flag football games Wednesday night at resulted in two tie games.

Senior girls ended their scoring at 28 points while 33 was the final for both junior girls' teams in the games that kicked off the high school's homecoming week activities.

Crowds of parents, faculty and friends packed the stands to cheer on the teams as each played two 30-minute halves of eight-on-eight.

“The games are a good start to the four nights of activities to follow for homecoming,” said Chris Bennett, student council supervisor and social studies teacher.

Members of the varsity football team coached; the offensive line guided the Blue junior and senior teams while the defensive line coached the White teams from both classes.

varsity football coaches officiated the game.

In previous years, seniors played the juniors, but the rivalry got out of hand, so school officials decided to have the two classes play themselves, according to Bennett.

“This way there are two teams in each class and more girls get the opportunity to play,” said Principal Kim Kolze.

All junior and senior girls are eligible to play in the annual flag football games, and teams are chosen at random. A total of 60 juniors and seniors signed up and participated this year, and practiced a handful of times prior to game night.

“My daughter (Carly) has been so excited about this for weeks,” said Tony Pietro, board member. “I think it’s a great event.”

The traditional all-male pom pon squad performed during the halftime show. The squad is made up of male students from all classes who choose to participate.

“The games are fun for the girls and a lot of people come out to watch and have a good time,” said Ryan Rubenstein, assistant principal of facilities and activities.

“I thought it was really fun and a good experience," said Carly Pietro, a junior.

“I’m excited — it was fun last year and a good time," said Taylor Coleman, a senior varsity football player who coached both last year and at this year's game.

All proceeds from the $5 admission price go back to the Student Council.
