Hawthorn Woods Holds Perennial Collection to Beautify Community

All residents and friends are asked to participate in an environmental project designed to share and split perennials from your garden and donate the bulbs and root plantings as you thin out your perennials to help beautify the Hawthorn Woods community. Donations will be accepted Saturday, August 23rd from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Village Hall, 2 Lagoon Drive in Hawthorn Woods. Perennials include Lilies, Hostas, Catmints, and Black Eyed Susans.

How to Bring Perennials: Split your overgrown plants with a shovel and wrap the roots in wet newspaper. Store in a plastic bag and hand them to the volunteers on Saturday morning.

The Village of Hawthorn Woods is currently working with local resident, Jack Dahlinger, as he pursues his Eagle Scout rank. The purpose of the project is to design and install a tree nursery for the Village of Hawthorn Woods with the ultimate goal of beautifying the town’s parks and public areas. Many of the trees in the local parks were killed and removed as a result of the Emerald Ash Borer, a disease where the beetles’ larvae eat the vital parts of the trees that transport food and water around the tree.
