Join us on December 6 at 2pm for the Essential Christmas Carol! In debt to his publisher, and with the Christmas season fast approaching, Charles Dickens managed to write A Christmas Carol in six weeks. Little did he know it was destined to become one of the most enduring Christmas stories of all time. A decade after its publication, Dickens began performing his abridged version of the tale. His public readings were dramatic, hypnotic, and hugely popular.
Author William Pack will reveal the legend behind A Christmas Carol, and recreate a reading of the story with a Victorian-era magic lantern show. In this storytelling lecture, William first relates curious origins behind A Christmas Carol. Then, using a script derived from Dickens’ only existing abridged reading copy, William will perform a reading of A Christmas Carol enhanced with a modern recreation of a magic lantern slide show popular during Dickens’ lifetime.
