LZHS National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists Announced

The semifinalists could be among the students selected to receive scholarships next spring.

Six students have been named semifinalists in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program, which will award more than $34 million in scholarships to high school seniors next spring.

The semifinalists are: Sean Delanty; Hayley Hinsberger; Patrick Juras; Adam Michael; Maggie Monson; and Eric Sun.

The students qualified as finalists by taking the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). About 1.5 million juniors nationwide took the test.

Next, National Merit Scholarship finalists — about 15,000 of them — will be selected from the group of semifinalists, based on their academic standing, their SAT scores and a recommendation from their high school principal. The semifinalists must also submit an application that includes an essay and information about their participation in school and community activities.

The National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced between April and July of next year.
