The thunder snow of 1 and 2 February 2011 is an event I will never forget. It was the first time I remember experiencing thunder and lightening with a blizzard. This storm was the third largest in recorded Lake Zurich history and I was concerned how the thunder snow would be handled.
I should have known better. The professionals took over. Our Public Works Department, headed by Director Dave Heyden and Superintendent of Public Works Mike Brown had a plan in place and they followed the plan to perfection. Our crews were on the roads for 40 consecutive hours making our roads passable and safe should there be an emergency.
Our Police Department headed by Chief Patrick Finlon and our Fire Department headed by Chief Terry Mastandrea all worked in concert to keep Lake Zurich residents safe, address emergencies, and manage the snow. A big thank you to everyone. You did a great job.

In addition to our regular crew, Lake Zurich residents are blessed to have a group of four gentlemen who stepped forward and helped our regular crews. These retired volunteer firefighters and/or retired public works employees gave our regular crews a much needed break and rest. Bob Block, Roger Block, Tom Arendt, and Bob Duprey made themselves available and unselfishly worked a nine-hour shift through the night to keep our roads open.
A very special thank you for your service and thinking of the community first. You have demonstrated even in retirement, your service to the community continues. You have set a high standard for all of us.
