17 in Illinois Sick Following Cantaloupe Salmonella Outbreak

Since July 7, more than 140 people have been infected in 20 states from salmonella bacteria linked to cantaloupe from farms in southwestern Indiana, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health. 

Two deaths have been linked to the infection, according to the Wall Street Journal. Both deaths were in Kentucky.  

The Illinois Department of Public Health announced Monday there are 17 cases in Illinois. Eight people have been hospitalized.

"Many cantaloupes have the growing area identified with a sticker," the CDC told the Wall Street Journal. "If no sticker is present, consumers should inquire about the source. When in doubt, throw it out."

Salmonella infection symptons include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps.

While most people can recover without treatment, but sensitive groups can became dangerously ill.
