8 Winter Driving Safety Tips from Lemont Police

Stay safe on the road—no matter what Old Man Winter throws at you.

No one want to break down, but especially not during frigid temperatures. The Lemont Police Department offers these handy tips for cold-weather driving.

  • Check for leaks, bad worn hoses, and other needed parts.
  • Check voltage on battery. It takes more battery to start your car in cold weather. Have a mechanic (or if you can do it yourself) tighten battery connections. If you drive an electric car, make sure you have extra gas handy.
  • Check your fluids. When coolant freezes, it expands and can damage your engine block. Check your manual for recommendations.
  • Check your wipers. Make sure they work. Refill your wiper fluid.
  • Check your tire tread. Bald tires won't keep you from skidding across ice.
  • Be ready. Keep emergency supplies such as ice scraper, shovel, jumper cables, flashlight, flares, blankets, and for longer trips, food and water.
  • IF you stall, stay put. Don't leave your car. Flip on your hazards so other drivers see you.
  • Don't run car for long times with windows up. Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning by running the car sporadically and ensuring the exhaust pipe is clear.
