Bagpipe Concert Held For Nursing Home Resident

LEMONT, IL — In May, a bagpipe concert was held for U.S. Marine veteran Mathias Mattern at Mother Theresa Rehabilitation Center at Franciscan Village in Lemont.

The concert was also held for the seniors, healthcare workers, first responders and their families. Some of Mattern's friends from high school and the military, including his long-time friend Thomas Brogan, a U.S. Army veteran, also came to the impromptu concert to support Mattern.

"All were keeping a social distance," Mattern's daughter Angela said. "I saw some shades inside the rehab open and a few patients standing to see out."

Dave Johnston from Chicalba Bagpiping Services played bagpipes and Joey McKee played drums for the concert outside Mattern's window.

"The visit and the music was intended to give him support and to thank the nurses and staff at the rehab, the first responders and to bring some joy to the patients and seniors who have been on lockdown," Angela said.
