Dedication Planned For 'The Quarryman's Wings'

LEMONT, IL — A dedication is planned for Lemont's newest art project, two pairs of wings located on the side of the Quarry Pub and Grill. The Quarryman's Wings dedication will be held Sept. 28 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the restaurant, 1015 State St., and the public is welcome at the event.

The art installation is a Girl Scout Silver Award project led by high school freshmen Neha and Nooriyah of Troop 70593 in the Lemont Girl Scout Service Unit 724.

"The girls developed the idea, drafted art sketches, hit the pavement looking for a suitable painting site, engaged with the Art and Culture Commission of Lemont and the Lemont Historical Society for technical advice, organized volunteers and saw this project through to its completion," Troop leader Kelly Zurek said. The project was over eight months in the making, she added.

The girls started work on the mural earlier this summer. Most recently, a pair of "tiny wings" have been added to the artwork. At the dedication, children will be offered the opportunity to have a hand in finalizing the tiny wings.

Neha and Nooriyah are in their 10 year of Girl Scouting. Zurek said the girls developed the mural idea after the troop took a trip to Nashville in 2018. There is a popular tourist attraction of a wings mural in Nashville.

The Girl Scout Silver Award is the second highest award a Girl Scout can earn, the highest honor attainable by a Girl Scout Cadette. The project must serve the greater community, entails 50+ hrs of service from each candidate and be sustainable. The girls previously completed a leadership journey curriculum in preparation for the project's demands.
