Des Plaines River Near Lemont Breaks Flood Record

The river got up to 13.26 feet, which is the moderate flooding stage.

LEMONT, IL — After 4 inches of rain fell across the area Sunday, the Des Plaines River near Lemont set a record with 13.26 feet, which indicates moderate flooding.

On May 13, the river was around 7 feet, but quickly rose as heavy rain hit the area. The National Weather Service does not list an exact rain total for Lemont, but nearby Lockport received 4.27 inches of rain and Darien received 4.42 inches of rain on Sunday.

The previous record was 12.6 feet, and the river is already back down to 12.26 feet as of Wednesday morning, according to the weather service.

The flood stage is 10 feet, while major flooding occurs at 15 feet.

The rest of the week is expected to be dry, although there is a chance of more rain on the weekend. The weather service said Thursday will be partly sunny with a high of 68, and Friday will also be partly sunny with a high of 73.
