Dog Looking For New Home After Falling In Icy Lemont Canal

LEMONT, IL — After a harrowing experience in an icy canal in Lemont, one lucky dog is looking for a new home.

Last week, the Lemont Fire Protection District responded to a dive rescue on the I&M Canal after a passerby reported a dog on the ice. The dog had broken through thin ice, and the bystander was able to pull the dog from the water when firefighters arrive, the District told Patch.

Firefighters wrapped the dogs in towels to dry her off, brought her in the fire truck to warm up, and took her to Lemont Police, where she was on a "stray hold" to see if any owners would come forward.

The dog, which is a female Australian Shepard mix, had no chip and no collar, according to Lemont Police.

Ruby Whiskers Animal Rescue in Lemont took the dog in on Monday after no owner came forward, Founder Kim Arias told Patch.

The dog has been chipped, vaccinated and showered, and is being fostered until a new home is found, Arias said.
