Lemont Trustee Wants Candidates Kicked Off Ballot

The Lemont electoral board met Monday to hear arguments from the sitting trustee and candidate hopefuls.

Two Lemont residents seeking candidacy in the April election wrote the wrong date or did not complete some portions of the filing documents, argues current Trustee Ron Stapleton.

Stapleton subsequently filed an objection to forms filed by RIck Ligthart and Kevin Cliff, both seeking spots on the board. Stapleton is also running for re-election.

The Village of Lemont electoral board met Monday for hearings regarding the objection.

The electoral board—made up of Mayor Brian Reaves, Trustee Jeanette Virgilio and Clerk Charlene Smollen—heard arguments from Stapleton and the two candidates. Stapleton said the forms contained multiple clerical errors.

If the commission agrees with Stapleton’s objection, Ligthart and Cliff will be taken off the ballot, which they said would ”be against the spirit of the electoral process.”
