Quick Response Leads to (Another) Life Saved at The CORE

A 53-year-old man was found unconscious inside the CORE. The actions of those around him saved his life.

For the second time in a nine-week span, observation and quick thinking helped save the life of a person utilizing the Lemont Park District's CORE.

Just before noon on Dec. 5, a 53 year-old man was found unconscious in the fitness center. CORE members standing by noticed him in distress and took action. Like a well-oiled machine, they moved smoothly and efficiently.

Claudia Galica instantly notified Fitness Desk staff, Michael Czuma, of the situation. Czuma alerted the CORE Service Desk and Customer Service Manager, Marybeth Nunzio, immediately called 911. Czuma then retrieved the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) returned to the scene along with Manager On Duty, Sue Wojnowski. At that time, two additional CORE Members, Randy McGregor and Sebastian Koziel, had begun Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Czuma and Wojnowski assisted the two CORE Members in continuing CPR efforts and AED shock protocol. The emergency response crews arrived on the scene, continued CPR and began advanced life saving measures preparing the patient for rapid transport to the hospital. The CORE Member was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox where he received further medical care.
