The Montessori School of Lemont has been utilizing STEM since the school's inauguration over 35 years ago; it's nothing new to Montessori
We’ve all heard of STEM education, the most recent trend to hit mainstream education. While this emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math is vital, it has been part of the core curriculum in Montessori for over 100 years. Early on, Maria Montessori saw the necessity of integrating these fundamental subjects into what she referred to as Cosmic Education (lessons that teach the inter-relatedness of all things).
Scientific nomenclature, exploration, and experiments are introduced at the primary level and lay the foundation for environmental stewardship, and the future testing and defending of hypotheses, assumptions, and norms. Technology is introduced in the upper grades in both an historical context and practical application. Classes in historical handcrafts and archaeological field trips (to practice the skills of past peoples by using early tools) provide context for the importance of modern technology. New tech is used in the classroom for research, presentations, and web design via smart tvs, digital microscopes, and 1:1 computing. Engineering inspires students to problem solve through a variety of hands-on experiences, from constructing bridges to building robots. Arts programs are being cut in many schools, but continue to thrive at MSOL; this makes our acronym STEAM, not just STEM. The arts are integrated into all areas of the curriculum, with sketching and painting, creative writing, crafts, music, and theater. Math begins by using concrete materials in geometry and the operations, and progresses to the study of abstract concepts in algebra. Music at MSOL begins in the primary and elementary classrooms with basic auditory and vocal exercises. Specially designed Montessori music materials include an introduction to notation, and build up to composition. Older students have pianos, guitars, and other instruments at their disposal throughout the day, for whenever they need a creative outlet or a break from their academics. After school rock band and music exploration classes are also offered to older students.
For over 100 years, Montessori elementary programs have been harnessing the power of STEAM to provide a well-rounded education through creativity, leadership, and exploration.
