Weather Service: Snow, Wind Could Make Travel Treacherous Thursday

The National Weather Service in Romeoville cautions area residents of “strong and potentially damaging winds along with a burst of heavy snow becoming likely Thursday afternoon and evening … which could lead to roads quickly becoming snow-covered and travel treacherous. At least a portion if not the entire late afternoon and early evening rush hour on Thursday will be impacted.”

Thursday night, the weather service is predicting snow with areas of blowing snow before and after midnight - coupled with a low temperature of around 17 degrees.

Move vehicles if possible so village can clear snow from streets

During and after any snowfall, the Village of Lemont asks residents to remove vehicles, if possible, so village streets can be cleared of snow. After a snowfall of two inches, if vehicles cannot be removed, residents should park on the odd-numbered side of the street on odd calendar days and even-numbered side on even calendar days.

According to the village’s December newsletter, salting and snow removal procedures in Lemont are as follows:

The public works department begins ice and snow control measures even before hazardous road conditions are expected. As soon as conditions warrant it, the salting process begins on major streets designated as primary routes, hills, curves and all intersections.

Residential streets that are relatively flat will be salted only at intersections. Salt remains the most cost-effective means of breaking the bond between ice and the street, especially with Lemont’s unique topography,

Plowing commences after snow accumulate to an inch or more. Village roadways are divided into nine zones for the plowing process with primary routes, including hills and school bus routes being plowed first.

As soon as primary routes are cleared, crews will move on to the secondary routes. After all streets are open, trucks will begin the curbing operation.

The goal of the public works department is to remove snow from all streets within six hours after the conclusion of a significant snowfall. Your cooperation in removing vehicles from the street and observing the odd-even parking regulations will make this job easier and more efficient.
