Baseball Cards In P.D. Evidence Room May Be Auctioned Off
The Libertyville Police Department took the cards into their possession after they were found on a village roadway.

LIBERTYVILLE, IL – Thousands of baseball cards may go up for auction after they fell off a vehicle trailer in Libertyville and have been collecting dust in the police department's evidence room over the past year. The police department took the baseball cards in to their possession this past September after a woman called to report she spotted assorted items scattered on the roadway, the Daily Herald reports.
The items included dozens of baseball figurines, gold-colored coins, several signed balls, a short-sleeved White Sox jersey, posters and three boxes containing around 8,4000 baseball cards, according to the article. The cards are arranged and filed in a storage container that could have been used by a collector and are made up of mainly Major League players from the 1980s and 1990s.

Police have been unable to identify the owner and no one has come forward to claim the property. And now the Libertyville Police Department will likely sell the cards as "surplus property" at auction, which is within a town's rights for unclaimed property. An auction house could catalog and determine the value for the items or the police department may call in an expert to assess the value, the Daily Herald reports.
