Cicada Brood XIII: What To Expect Next Spring In Lake County?
Brood XIII of 17-year periodic cicadas are expected to "emerge by the millions in late May and early June 2024."

LAKE COUNTY, IL — The Lake County Forest Preserve District has been informing the public about an expected influx of cicada expected next May and June that could produce much more noise in some parts of the county.
Brood XIII of 17-year periodic cicadas are expected to "emerge by the millions in late May and early June 2024," according to a post on the Lake County Forest Preserves Facebook page.
"It will not be easy to miss. Cicadas are the most efficient and loudest sound-producing insects around. While the three cicada species that will emerge look very similar, their calls sound different," according to Lake County Forest Preserve District officials.

Cicadas' calls can reach up to 90 decibels — or the same level of noise produced by hairdryers, blender and power tools — so some portions of Lake County could get pretty noisy.
