Coroner IDs Man Who Died After Punching Out Bar Window

Thirty two-year-old Jonathan Banks of Chicago died from sharp force injuries after injuring himself at a Beach Park bar early Monday.

LAKE COUNTY, IL — The Lake County Coroner's Office has identified a 32-year-old man who died after punching his fist through a window at a bar in Beach Park as Jonathan Banks of Chicago.

An autopsy performed Tuesday shows Banks died from sharp force injuries, according to a news release from the coroner's office.

Authorities say Banks was being escorted out of the bar in the 37800 block of North Sheridan Road after getting into a verbal disagreement with another person when he punched a window near the front door of a bar.

He sustained a severe cut to his arm and was bleeding significantly after punching the window, according to a news release from the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

Banks asked a friend to bring him to a hospital, and was drifting in and out of consciousness while on the way. At one point he regained consciousness and grabbed the wheel of his friend's car, causing the driver to strike a curb and a trash can, authorities said.

The car became disabled, and deputies were called to the 1800 block of North Sheridan Road in Waukegan at 2 a.m. Monday.

Banks was then taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the news release.

Lake County Sheriff’s detectives are continuing to investigate the incident, but it appears the injury the man sustained appears was self-inflicted.
