D70 Looks To Fill Open School Board Seat

The Libertyville School District 70 School Board is accepting applications to fill a vacancy on the board due to the resignation of Linda Lucke.

In submitting her resignation, effective Sept. 26, 2020, Mrs. Lucke cited a family move outside of District 70 boundaries. Mrs. Lucke, a retired Learning Center director in District 70, was first elected in April 2015 and reelected to her second four-year term in April 2019.

Mrs. Lucke said she will never forget District 70, adding, “It’s hard to leave after 26 years as a teacher and several more years as a board member. After that long relationship, District 70 will always hold a special place in my heart.”

Supt. Dr. Matt Barbini thanked Mrs. Lucke for her dedication to the school district. “The students, families, staff, and larger Libertyville Community have been incredibly fortunate to have had Linda’s leadership and service as a school board member. She will certainly be missed and we wish her well.”

"On behalf of the school board, I would like to thank Linda for her service as a board member in District 70,” said Board President Tom Vickers. “The entire school community benefited from her dedication and teacher perspective. Linda brought a calm and insightful perspective to every issue. While we will miss her in Libertyville, we wish her and her husband well as they begin a new chapter.”

To fill the vacancy, the board of education is seeking applicants from across the District 70 community to fill Mrs. Lucke’s position. The appointed individual will serve until the April 6, 2021, Consolidated Election. The District 70 Board of Education meets at least once a month. Interested applicants are asked to submit an application that can be found here. Applicants also may submit a letter of interest with any other information they would like school board members to consider. Interested applicants are encouraged to file for candidacy to be on the ballot to complete the remaining two-years on Mrs. Lucke’s term or run for a four-year term in the April 6 elections. Candidacy information is available from the Lake County Clerk’s Office.

Applications and letters of interest may be mailed to or dropped off at the District 70 Education Resource Center, 1381 W. Lake St., Libertyville, or emailed to Rose Bourgeois, secretary to the school board, at rbourgeois@d70schools.org. Applications and letters of interest also may be faxed to the office at 847-362-3003 with attention to Mrs. Bourgeois. The firm deadline to submit applications and letters of interest is at noon on Oct. 21, 2020. Anyone with questions can contact Mrs. Bourgeois at the ERC at 847-362-9695.

The information will be reviewed by the District 70 Board of Education and interviews may occur in the evening during the first two weeks of November. The board is expected to appoint a new member in time for the Nov. 23 meeting.

To be eligible for appointment as a school board member, a person must be a citizen of the United States, at least 18 years of age, a registered voter, and a resident of the State of Illinois and Libertyville School District 70 for at least one year.

With the resignation of Mrs. Lucke, the April 6, 2021, Consolidated Elections will host five board seats, including four seats with four-year terms, and one seat with a two-year term to complete Mrs. Lucke’s term.
