District 70 Schools Recognize Veterans Monday

Area veterans are invited to morning assemblies at Libertyville schools. A five-piece Navy band will perform at Butterfield School.

LIBERTYVILLE, IL -- Libertyville students will get the chance to recognize area veterans as part of assemblies and activities scheduled at schools across town Monday. Some Libertyville School District 70 schools are inviting veterans and military members currently serving to morning assemblies that will include a five-piece Navy band, according to a news release from the school district. Veterans will also get time to talk with students and recall some of their military memories.

The Navy Band of Great Lakes, known as the Brass Ambassadors, will perform at 9 a.m. on Nov. 12 for military veterans and members at Butterfield School, 1441 W, Lake St. For the second year, Butterfield is inviting current and retired military members of Butterfield students to meet at the school at 8:30 a.m. for a special assembly, The Veterans Day Recognition Celebration, according to the news release.

“After our first Veterans Day Recognition Celebration in 2016, many of our guests shared with us this was the first time they had ever been honored for their service,”teacher Holly R. Simon said. “The event was so touching and emotional, we are looking forward to our Veterans Day Recognition Celebration 2018.”

The program also will include students singing a special song along with a slide show, and a chance to view a patriotic student art show, “Let Freedom Ring.” Some students will read their letters of appreciation to veterans through the program Operation Gratitude, with letters called “Dear Hero.”

Also, new this year will be an assembly for current and veteran military members at Rockland School, 160 W. Rockland Road, on Nov. 12. The assembly will begin in the gymnasium around 9 a.m. and will involve recognition and stories from veterans/active military. Rockland students will sing patriotic songs as a tribute for their accomplishments.

At Adler Park School, students will be doing buddy activities in the classroom to write letters to heroes for Operation Gratitude. Operational Gratitude is a national program that allows people to send packages and letters of thanks to those serving in the military.

Copeland Manor School held a Veterans Day assembly on Friday.
