Drunk Man Tried To Disarm Libertyville Officer: Police

The Waukegan man now faces charges after he also spit at officers, police said.

LIBERTYVILLE, IL -- A Waukegan man accused of trying to grab a police officer’s gun following a fight at a Libertyville bar now faces charges, authorities said. Juan C. Martinez-Munoz, of the 2000 block of West Glen Flora Avenue in Waukegan, has been charged with aggravated battery to a police officer and disarming a police officer in connection with the Jan. 17 incident at Austin’s Bar & Saloon, 481 Peterson Road in Libertyville.

Authorities were first called to the local bar at 8:50 p.m. for a report of a person who had been involved in a fight. When they arrived, they found Martinez-Munoz who was “highly intoxicated and combative, resisting and spitting at officers,” according to the Libertyville Police Department report.

At one point, he tried to reach for an officer’s handgun, authorities said.

He was taken to Condell Medical Center where he was held overnight. He was released from the hospital on Jan. 18 and taken into police custody, according to the police report.

His bail was set at $30,000.
