Man Gets Prison In Overdose Death Of Huntley Father

A Carpentersville man was sentenced to seven years in prison for delivering drugs that killed a 26-year-old father from Huntley.

Antwon D. Hawkins Jr., 27, of the 1700 block of Silverstone Drive in Carpentersville, was charged with three counts of drug-induced homicide, a Class X felony.

Hawkins accepted a negotiated plea deal from the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office and pleaded guilty to one count of drug-induced homicide. Prosecutors dropped the other two counts as a result of the agreement.

McHenry County Judge Robert Wilbrandt approved the deal on Friday and sentenced Hawkins to seven years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. He will also be required to pay $2,149 in court fees and fines.

A criminal complaint alleges that Hawkins delivered heroin and cocaine to John Delorenzo, 26, of Huntley, on February 13.

Officers found Delorenzo dead at his home and found evidence indicating that he had used illegal narcotics, which had been purchased from Hawkins, according to a motion.

Delorenzo’s obituary said he leaves behind his mother, a son, and two brothers. “His greatest joy was spending time with his son Jayden – like two peas in a pod, just being together was a good day,” the obituary read.

Hawkins, who was arrested in March, will be required to serve 75% of his prison sentence and will receive credit for time served in the McHenry County jail, court records show.
