Man Attempts To Close Garage Door On Cop During Crash Probe: Police
The 42-year-old Libertyville man now faces driving under the influence, obstructing and leaving the scene of an accident charges.
LIBERTYVILLE, IL — A 42-year-old Libertyville man is accused of ignoring a police officer who approached his car to talk to him about a hit-and-run crash while he was stopped in a driveway in Libertyville earlier this month. Authorities say Kurtis Coroneos instead opened the garage door at a home on Gulfstream Parkway, pulled his car in and attempted to shut the garage door, police said.
Coroneos, of the 1200 block of Gulfstream Parkway, now faces charges of driving under the influence, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, leaving the scene of the accident and obstructing a police officer in connection with the Feb. 4 incident, according to a report from the Libertyville Police Department.
Authorities were first called to investigate the hit and run crash with property damage, which happened at about 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 4 in the area of North Milwaukee Avenue and Peterson Road, according to a police report. Officers were provided with a description of the vehicle that caused the collision and the vehicle’s registration.

Officers checked the address associated with the registration and located the vehicle near Gulfstream Parkway and Red Top Drive, according to the police report. The car pulled into a driveway and then into a garage at home in the 1200 block of Gulfstream Parkway and the vehicle then pulled into a residential driveway, according the news release.
The driver refused "to acknowledge the officer and instead opened the overhead garage door, pulled the vehicle inside, and attempted to close the overhead garage door," according to the police report.

"The officer followed the car and walked inside the garage before the overhead garage door closed, which tripped the safety sensor," Chad Roszkowiak, deputy chief of operations for the Libertyville Police Department, told Patch.
Coroneos is also accused of refusing to acknowledge several commands to get out of his vehicle, according to a police report. Police eventually "gained entry" to the vehicle and took him into custody, authorities said.
A $3,000 personal recognizance bond was issued for Coroneos, and he is next expected in court on Feb. 24.
