Man With Gas Can Taped To Chest Fatally Shot By Waukegan PD: Coroner

The officer was attempting to put out a fence fire when the man, who was also armed with a knife and hammer, approached him, police said.

WAUKEGAN, IL — A police officer fatally shot a 26-year-0ld Waukegan man after the man approached the officer while armed with a hammer and knife and with a gas can taped to his chest, officials said.

Jesus Manjarrez of Waukegan was pronounced dead at the scene in the 1000 block of Glen Court in Waukegan on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said. Preliminary autopsy results show Manjarrez died from multiple gunshot wounds, and the Illinois State Police is investigating the officer-involved shooting.

The Waukegan Police Department was first called to Manjarrez's home on Glen Court at about 12:45 p.m. for a reported neighbor dispute. When they arrived at the scene, they found a wooden fence separating the two neighbors' properties on fire.

The officer retrieved a fire extinguisher from their squad car and returned to the area of the fire, according to a news release from the Lake County Coroner's Office.

"As the officer walked towards the fire, a male subject, armed with a knife, a hammer, and a gas can taped to his chest, advanced toward the officer," according to a statement from the coroner's office.

The officer told the man not to come closer but he did not listen, and the officer shot him.
