Man Takes Own Life After Shooting Woman: Police

The couple shared custody of a young child who was inside the apartment at the time of the shooting, according to authorities.

GURNEE, IL — A young child was inside an apartment when a Gurnee man shot the child's mother in the stomach Friday night, authorities said. The woman was critically injured and the man ended up fatally shooting himself in the head after police officers entered the apartment in the 6700 block of Derby Drive in Gurnee at about 9:30 p.m., saving the woman and the young child, according to a news release from the Gurnee Police Department.

The armed man, who shared custody of the child with the woman, barricaded himself inside. Authorities set up a perimeter around the area and evacuated nearby residents before the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System Emergency Response Team was called to the scene and a standoff followed, according to the news release.

Two hours later, a drone was sent into the apartment and located the man with the fatal gunshot wound, according to police.

The woman was found with a gunshot wound to the stomach and lying inside the home when officers entered the apartment. Officers carried her to an ambulance and she was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center. Her condition was listed as critical but stable on Saturday, according to a news release.

The child was not harmed, police said.
