Nearby Hospitals Not Ranked Among the Safest in Chicago Area
Eight hospitals in the state's Patch towns got straight A's but nearby hospitals received B's in national safety study.

Nearby hospitals did not receive the best grades in a recently released national hospital safety study.
The Leapfrog Group, along with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, evaluated hospitals across the nation on the basis of numerous criteria and consolidated the results into a single letter grade for each. Eight Chicago-area hospitals received Leapfrog’s highest grade, “Straight As,” while several more received an “A” grade.
Nearby Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville received a “B”. Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington and Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital in Lake Forest also received a “B.”

The national Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, which ranks more than 2,500 hospitals, are available at the safety score website.
“The analysis finds that despite considerable improvement in the safety of hospital care since the Score’s launch in 2012, avoidable deaths remain high,” the site said. “Findings point to a 9 percent higher risk of avoidable death in B hospitals, 35 percent higher in C hospitals, and 50 percent higher in D and F hospitals, than in A hospitals.”
