No Charges Filed In Fatal Pit Bull Shooting
The incident occurred on a the Des Plaines River Trail in Libertyville.
LAKE COUNTY, IL — Charges have not been filed after a pit bull was fatally shot earlier this year on the Des Plaines River Trail in Libertyville, Lake County Forest Preserve District officials said Monday.
The shooting occurred at about 5:10 p.m. on April 16 on a portion of the trail north of Route 137, according to information released by ranger police following the incident. According to forest preserve officials, a person was walking an unleashed dog on the trail when there was an "incident" between the dog and a horse and its rider on the trail.
The horse rider, who had a concealed carry license, shot the dog, according to authorities.

The dog died at the scene, and the horse was taken via trailer to a local veterinarian to be treated. No one was injured during the incident.

Following a Ranger Police investigation, the matter was closed and no charges were filed, according to Kim Mikus, communications specialist for the Lake County Forest Preserves.
Following the incident, forest preserve district officials are reminding all residents that dogs should be leashed on trails.
