Plans for Athletic Field at Former Brainerd Site Move Forward

A panel approved variations, which addressed signage, fencing and open space along perimeter of the property, according to the Daily Herald.

The village’s zoning board of appeals voted 5-2 Monday to recommend variations necessary to move forward with construction of a $4 million athletic field on the former Brainerd campus, according to the Daily Herald.

There have been several community efforts over the years to save the site of the former Libertyville High School and Jackson Gym with a last-ditch effort made in 2014 when voters were asked to raise property taxes to repurpose the site as a community center, according to the article.

Both buildings, which are located on property owned by Libertyville-Vernon Hills Area High School District 128, have since been demolished.

The school district is planning to build an athletic field with permeable, synthetic turf, a storage/restroom building and a 96-lot parking lot, according to the Daily Herald.

The school board and village council would still need to approve a final plan, the newspaper reports.
