Police Search for Missing Libertyville Man; Schools on Soft Lockdown

The 30-year-old U.S. Army veteran is believed to be distraught, possibly suicidal and could be armed.

Police are searching Tuesday for a 30-year-old Libertyville man who has been reported missing.

Daniel Nerstrom was reported missing at about 6 p.m. Monday from his home in Libertyville and is believed to be distraught and possibly suicidal. He is a U.S. Army veteran and could be armed with a handgun, police said.

A search helicopter and K9 tracking dogs have been enlisted to help with the search efforts. The Libertyville Police Department has also been working with other police agencies since Nerstrom was reported missing, according to a police press release.

Police said there is a possibility that Nerstrom has left the area.

Libertyville area schools have taken precautionary measures to secure their buildings until Nerstrom is located. Libertyville School District 70 schools are all on soft lockdown Tuesday.

“Local police have assured us that students and staff are not in any danger,” according to an update posted at 11:39 a.m. on the school district webiste. “Local schools are on lockdown as a precautionary measure as we keep student safety a priority.”

Nerstrom could be wearing a black or green Carhartt style jacket with numerous military patches, a grey underarmor shirt, tan military style boots, and a camouflage skull cap with a red spider logo.

He is 6-feet 1-inch tall, 175 pounds and has blonde hair and blue eyes.
