$50K Bond Set For Robber Who Punched Police Dog: Authorities
The 39-year-old Lake Co. man now faces several charges after K9 Dax helped in apprehending him, police said.

LAKE COUNTY, IL – An accused robber is being held on a $50,000 bond after he took money from a man early Sunday, fled and ended up punching a police dog as authorities attempted to take him into custody, police said Monday. Authorities were first called to the scene of the robbery, a motel in the 31000 block of Route 45 in Fremont Township, where they spoke to a 25-year-old Mundelein man who said he was approached by a man who asked him for money, according to a news release from the Lake Co. Sheriff's Office. The Mundelein man gave the accused thief some money but the suspect ended up grabbing more cash, police said.
The robber then ran from the motel, and the Mundelein man chased him for a short distance before stopping to call 911, according to a news release.
Lake County Sheriff's Office Deputy John Forlenza and his K9 partner Dax arrived and began tracking the suspect. Dax tracked him to the ground in the backyard of a nearby residence, according to police.

Police said the alleged robber, later identified as Chester A. Biggs Jr., 39, refused to follow instructions and attempted to flee by climbing a fence in the backyard, police said. K9 Dax intervened, bit and apprehended the male, according to the news release.
While being apprehended, police said Biggs punched Dax and was then taken into custody. Biggs was taken by ambulance to Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment of a dog bite to the leg. Dax was not injured during the incident, Lake Co. Sheriff's Office Sgt. Christopher Covelli told Patch.
