Scammers Prey On Owners Of Lost Pets In Lake County

The scammers will tell the pet owners the pet has been found and then ask for money to prevent euthanization or the release of the pet.

LAKE COUNTY, IL — The Lake County Health Department wants residents to be aware of a scam that targets pet owners who are searching for lost animals.

Scammers are impersonating Lake County Animal Care and Control and other local organizations to exploit people during emotionally stressful situations, according to health department officials.

In reported cases, individuals who recently posted online about a missing pet are contacted by the scammers, who falsely claim the pet has been found. They may say the animal is seriously injured and requires emergency surgery or demand payment to retrieve the pet.

Owners are then pressured to pay large sums immediately, often under threats that the pet will be euthanized, released or permanently taken away if payment is not made, according to officials.

“This scam preys on people who are already vulnerable and distressed about a missing pet,” said Chris Hoff, Executive Director of the Lake County Health Department. “Lake County Animal Care and Control will never call, text, or message you to request payment over the phone to ensure your pet’s safety.”

Officials encourage residents to remain calm if contacted by a suspected scammer and verify claims directly with the organization through official channels. Common warning signs include:

  • Pressure to send money quickly
  • Reluctance or inability to provide detailed contact information
  • Threats regarding your pet
  • Excuses about why you cannot see your pet in person

Pet owners should verify claims using a publicly listed phone number from an official website, not the number provided by the caller. Suspicious calls or messages should be reported to local law enforcement, officials said.

"If you believe you've been the victim of a scam, it is very important to report it to your local police department," Lake County Sheriff John D. Idleburg said. "This allows for a criminal investigation to take place and hold the scammer accountable."

Lake County Animal Care and Control can be reached at 847-377-4700, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
