Our world would be so different if it were not for bees. There are many plants that rely in the wind to spread their pollen. What about those that don't have that luxury? Did you know bees give us blueberries, apples, cherries, avocados, squash, carrots, almond trees and more? A huge amount of our well being rests on those little buzzing insects.
Honeybee colonies are on a rapid decline. An average of 30% of all colonies have died every winter since 2007. This needs to be a huge wake up call.
Honeybees are the most important pollinators of many things we eat. 71 of 100 crops that supply nearly 90% of our food supply are pollinated by bees. The less bees we have means lower food availability and higher prices. How about no almonds and less coffee?
Bees are having trouble now finding pollen and nectar because people are using too much herbicide! If flowers are contaminated with insecticides it will kill bees off. There has also been an increase in parasites, virus and other bee pathogens. These weaken the honeybee's immune system!
What can you do? Plant more flowers! Don't use herbicides or insecticides! You want to plant native flowering plants. Let the bees pollenate, watch and learn!
Do you know someone who raises honeybees? Let us do all we can this summer to preserve this vital creature! The future of our food depends on it!
