Volunteer Program Expands Monitoring Of Lake County Lakes

A volunteer-led program is collecting water quality data on 21 lakes, including Butler Lake and Sylvan Lake.

LAKE COUNTY, IL — A growing group of volunteers are helping monitor and improve the health of Lake County’s lakes through a citizen-led program that collects water quality data and shares it publicly to guide restoration efforts.

The initiative by Lake County Lake Lovers has expanded this year from 12 lakes to 21, with volunteers trained to measure indicators such as phosphorus levels, oxygen and algae growth, according to the Daily Herald. Among the new lakesbeing monitored are Butler Lake in Libertyville and Sylvan Lake near Mundelein.

Organizers say the goal is to build a network of informed residents who can work together to address common water-quality issues affecting many of the county’s 173 lakes, according to the article.
