Imagine that you are in a terrible accident on your way home today. You have struck your head and are now in a coma. Who will step up and speak to your healthcare providers about what you would want done and what you would not want done? Will they know what you would want done and what you don’t want done?
Suppose your mother is caught in a terrible house fire. She is severely burned and unconscious. Are you ready to step in to make healthcare decisions on her behalf? Do you know her wishes about healthcare in this situation? Have you ever talked with her about what her end-of-life care choices would be?
April 16, 2014 is National Healthcare Decisions Day. It is a reminder that everyone should think through and discuss their healthcare decisions. About 70% of individuals have thought about end-of-life issues, but less than 30% have done anything about those thoughts. Do it before you can’t speak for your self and that, unfortunately, can happen any day. Do it today or do it the 16th, but do it.
