Woman Drives Drunk With Child In Car, Crashes: Police

A Mundelein woman was arrested last week. Police say her husband had tried to get her to not drive with their child prior to the incident.

LIBERTYVILLE, IL – A 55-year-old Mundelein woman faces DUI and child endangerment charges after she allegedly got into a fight with her husband outside a Libertyville bar and drove off with their child in the backseat, police said. Police were called to Austin’s, 481 Peterson Road, where they spoke with the husband of Cynthia Smith. The husband told police he’d gotten into a fight with his wife about her intoxication level and the fact that she planned to drive with their child in the car, according to a Libertyville Police Department report.

A witness told police Smith got into her car, nearly hit her husband and then drove off, running into a brick retaining wall, according to the police report.

Smith and the damaged vehicle were located at the couple’s home in Mundelein. An open pint glass holding an alcoholic beverage was found in the center console.

Smith was arrested for driving under the influence and her vehicle was towed from the scene, according to the police report.

Smith was processed and released after posting her driver’s license and a $1,000 personal recognizance bond. She is charged with driving under the influence, endangering the life/health of a child and various traffic violations.

She is next expected in court on May 3.
