LAKE COUNTY, IL — A 20-year-old man faces drunken driving charges for allegations he drove her car into a squad car in Waukegan.

A Lake County Sheriff's Office deputy was transporting a man — who'd been arrested on a domestic battery charge — to the Lake County Jail when the collision occurred at about 2:10 a.m. Saturday, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

Authorities say the driver of a Dodge Charger, Anas M. Karmash, 20, was in the inside lane headed south on Sheridan Road near Washington Street when he made an abrupt right turn into a parking lot and hit the driver's side of the squad car, which was headed south next to Karmash's car, according to the news release.

He parked her car in the parking lot, got out of her car and tried to blend in with a group of people in the parking lot, authorities said.

The deputy approached her and noticed signs of alcohol impairment, according to the news release.

Karmash, of the 33900 block of North Summerfields Drive in unincorporated Gurnee, was taken into custody and charged with driving under the influence - alcohol, underage consumption of alcohol, operating an uninsured vehicle, failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash and improper lane usage.

The man who was in the squad car and being transported to the jail on a domestic battery charge sustained a back injury during the collision, authorities said. He was taken to an area hospital, treated for his injury and released back into custody a short time later.

Police say additional or enhanced charges are possible against Karmash. A $3,000 personal recognizance bond was issued for Karmash, who was processed and released.

He is next expected in court on Sept. 13.
