Firefighters also extricated the woman and transported her by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Woodstock Hospital with life-threatening injuries, Lieb said.

Fire officials said that a LifeNet medical helicopter was asked to respond but they were unable to fly due to weather conditions.

The driver of the garbage truck refused medical attention and is cooperating fully with the investigation.

The Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) was activated to assist with the crash investigation. The roadway closed in both directions for several hours until 7 a.m.

Lieb said no citations have been issued yet, pending the completion of the investigation.
