Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff Realty Group Kicks Off Childhood Cancer Awareness Month with The Sunshine Kids
CHICAGO, IL –The KoenigRubloff Cares Foundation, the charitable arm of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff Realty Group and The Sunshine Kids, a national non-profit organization that offers a variety of programs for children that are battling cancer, kicked off Childhood Cancer Awareness Month with a series of activities in Chicago. It was The Sunshine Kids’ first series of events in the Chicago area.
On Tuesday, September 1st, the KoenigRubloff Cares Foundation and The Sunshine Kids sponsored an event at Lurie Children’s Hospital. More than 100 children and family members attended, and were invited to create a personal Build-a-Bear, decorate Sprinkles cupcakes and enjoy a gourmet pasta bar lunch provided by Lettuce Entertain You Restaurants.
The following day on September 2nd, 13 Sunshine Kids from the Chicago metro area and Northern Illinois, along with their parents, went to Wrigley Field to see the Cubs vs. the Reds. The morning started out with the Sunshine Kids and volunteers walking the field and getting to take photos by home plate before the game. Chicago Cubs relief pitcher Jason Motte came out to speak with the kids and sign autographs for each and every one of them. The kids then headed to a suite to watch the game.

“First off, I just want to say that The Sunshine Kids is an incredible organization that really helps to brighten the days of these children who are battling cancer,” said Joe Stacy, Chairman of the KoenigRubloff Cares Foundation. Stacy continued, “It’s the simplest acts that people take for granted every day. Being able to go to a Cubs game and being able to Build-a-Bear were activities that served as something fun and different for many of them and we are so happy to be able to do something little that hopefully went a long way.”
“What a way to kick off September as National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month!” said Jennifer Wisler, Director of Children’s Services for The Sunshine Kids. Wisler continued, “For one day, the hospital environment was transformed into a magical place where the Kids added their hopes and dreams to their bear’s hearts, created one of a kind cupcake masterpieces, indulged in the bottomless pasta bar and all the while gave their parents the opportunity to see them smile! I also cannot tell you how amazing it was to watch so many Kids experience so many firsts at the Cubs game - first time at a baseball game and first time at Wrigley Field. It truly was a once in a lifetime opportunity. We saw new friendships form, new freedoms emerge and most of all, a feeling that they are not alone in their fight against cancer.”
