Fast Facts: Proviso East, last year’s Class 4A state runners-up, are in the Proviso West Tournament finals for the 18th time in 50 appearances. The Pirates are the defending tournament champions looking for their 11th title in tournament history. Proviso East cruised past Oswego 79-55, in the semifinals. The win avenged one of the Pirates’ two losses this season. Oswego beat Proviso East at its Thanksgiving tournament in November. Sterling Brown is one of the state’s top seniors, and is committed to coaching legend Larry Brown and SMU. Paris Lee has signed with Illinois State. The Pirates also have several other weapons, including Jevon Carter, who is the cousin of last year’s star guard Keith Carter, who now plays at St. Louis. Under coach Donnie Boyce, one of the Pirates’ most famous players, Proviso East is known for its defense, and the Pirates have the depth to come at teams in waves. Morgan Park is in the championship game at Proviso West for the second time in 14 tournament appearances, but just the first time since finishing second in 1975.The Mustangs are led by Billy Garrett Jr., who signed with DePaul. But they also feature one of the top juniors in the state in 6-foot-7 Josh Cunningham, who had a double-double in Morgan Park’s 67-52 win over Stevenson in the semifinals. In addition to the star power, the Mustangs have an incredibly deep and talented roster. In the tournament, eight players have put up significant offensive outputs, including emerging freshman Alonzo Chatman.
Quotable: “I’m considered to be one of the leaders of the team, so I have to come out and lead by example,” Sterling Brown said. “It’s always good helping my team anyway I can. Whatever they need for us to win, that’s what I’ll do.”
