Holiday 'Nog

Bailey Phillips of The Chopping Block discusses her love of a favorite holiday beverage, Egg Nog, including an easy recipe you can make at home.

Greetings from my bathtub. As I enjoy my soak, I’m having a delicious and nutritious “dinner” of Dean’s Holiday Eggnog, which I promise is calorie free, fat free, not processed in the slightest and is loaded with vitamins. I also promise that the reason that my beverage of choice is now the consistency of a thin film has nothing to do with the amount of liquor that I’ve poured in this container. Have no fear, though. I only have to fit into evening gown on New Year’s Eve for a black tie dinner at The Signature Room on the 95th floor of the John Hancock Building. It’ll be fine. This is why Spanx were created, right?

Eggnog is a holiday delicacy made with milk, cream, whipped eggs, sugar, and (traditionally) brandy, rum, whisky, bourbon, Kahlua, vodka, or a combination of liquors. There are a few different stories on where this incredibly rich beverage stemmed from.  One story says that it may have originated in England, where it was incredibly popular among the aristocracy. Those who could afford eggs and milk would make a drink called an Egg Flip, which was mixed with brandy, very similar to the way the drink is served today. These drinks were served out of noggins (small, carved wooden mugs), hence where the term “nog” came from. Eventually, the name was shortened to what we now know as Eggnog.

For those of you craving some alcoholic (or non-alcoholic) eggy deliciousness in a glass, here’s a great recipe from Food Network’s Alton Brown that you can whip up in 15 minutes. Who knows? Maybe you’ll follow in my footsteps and enjoy some in the bathtub! Things always taste better in the bathtub anyway!
