Local Retailers 'Toy Around' to Support Specialty Stores
Today marks Neighborhood Toy Store Day, which celebrates independent specialty toy retailers across the country. Many North Side businesses, including Timeless Toys in Lincoln Square, are opting in.
North Side toy stores join hundreds across the country today in celebrating Neighborhood Toy Store Day.
The festive event—observed annually on the second Saturday in November since 2010—was created by the American Specialty Toy Retailing Association, or ASTRA, to draw attention to independent toy stores and highlight what sets them apart from big-box chains.
"It's a way to celebrate locally-owned, independent stores that bring jobs to the community," ASTRA representative Susan Oliver said. "Where the dollars stay in the community, and are re-circulated throughout the community. They contribute to the tax base, and they contribute, usually, to the charm and the vibrancy of a downtown area."

Oliver said about 200 stores in the U.S. participated in the initiative's first year, with that number increasing to around 400 last year. While Oliver said ASTRA wouldn't have an exact count until after the day is over, participation is expected to grow again this year.
Timeless Toys, at 4749 N. Lincoln Avenue, will have game demonstrations, art projects and prizes from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday. They'll also clue parents in on ASTRA's 2012 Best Toys for Kids.
